Old Photo Studio is a free tool for restoring old family photos. It runs in your web browser, so your photos stay on your own device. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
What it does today
The tool removes scratches and dust, adds color to black-and-white photos, evens out faded tones, cleans up grain and blur, and makes old photos 4 times larger. How it works explains each step and its limits.
Our models
We train the restoring models ourselves, on old photos that are listed as public domain or free of known copyright restrictions. The models are small enough to run on your own device. The how it works page credits the open-source work they build on, with each licence. We don’t license our models for copying, extraction or reuse. The open-source licences we list belong to those projects, and our own models are not released under them.
How we write
We use AI tools to help write and check these pages. Illustrations on the site are drawn with AI tools and checked by us. Tips on scanning and caring for photos come from the Library of Congress, the National Archives and the Northeast Document Conservation Center, and each tip names its source.
The example photo
The before-and-after example on our home page is part of a 1915 photo of two girls in a garden, photographer unknown, from Fortepan, a Hungarian photo archive. Wikimedia Commons lists the photo itself as public domain. Fortepan shares its scan of the photo under the CC BY-SA 3.0 licence. Our restored version is made from that scan, so we share it under the same licence.
What we don’t do
- We don’t see your photos. They are never sent to us.
- No business pays to appear on this site.
- We don’t show any before-and-after example we didn’t make with this tool.
